The NWP today confirmed the selection of Karima Budhwani and Rick Folka as their final two Council Candidates for the 2026 municipal election. Karima, a long-time resident of New Westminster and Rick, who was born and raised in the city, previously ran for the NWP in the 2022 municipal election.
In September, the NWP announced New Westminster Councillor Daniel Fontaine will be the elector organization's 2026 Mayoral candidate. Since then, Councillor Paul Minhas, 2022 Mayoral candidate Ken Armstrong, community leaders Maryann Morrison and Ray Porcellato have been confirmed as the NWP’s first 2026 Council candidates.
“Karima and Rick will bring grassroots, non-partisan perspectives to Council that are much needed at City Hall,” said Councillor Fontaine. “With today’s announcement, the NWP is presenting a team of Council candidates ready to lead and govern New Westminster. Together, we can end the era where City Hall reflects the priorities of a select few and start building a New Westminster that reflects the needs and dreams of every neighbourhood.”
"I am very proud to be running alongside Daniel for Mayor and the NWP Council team”, said candidate Budhwani. “I am running because strong communities begin with strong people. When residents feel supported, valued, and equipped to thrive, our entire city grows stronger.”
“I am very excited to be running for council with the NWP team led by our mayoral
candidate, Daniel Fontaine” said candidate Folka. “As a Chartered Professional
Accountant with extensive experience in fiscal responsibility and accountability, I
understand the importance of managing resources responsibly. My focus will be
prioritizing projects that align with the best interests of our residents, ensuring that every
decision reflects both financial prudence and the needs of our community.”
The NWP will announce its School Board team in the New Year.
