April 24, 2026 (New Westminster, BC) - Within 20 days of 12-year incumbent Patrick Johnstone’s decision to seek yet another term in office, 75% (6 out of 8) of his elected Community First (CF) colleagues in New Westminster have decided to quit and not seek re-election in October. CF’s entire School Board Caucus has decided to keep their names off Mr. Johnstone’s slate this year.
“By refusing to put their name on the ballot with the current Mayor, these departing politicians are voting with their feet,” said NWP City Council candidate Ken Armstrong. “If three-quarters of his own Caucus would rather quit than defend the mayor’s record this fall, it is clearly time for a change at New Westminster City Hall. That change starts with listening. With Councillor Daniel Fontaine as our Mayoral candidate, our NWP team is listening to neighbourhoods and ready to lead.”
NWP candidates invite residents to attend their next City Matters neighbourhood meetings:
School’s Edition - Thursday, April 30; 6:30-8:00pm; Ecole Lord Tweedsmuir Elementary School; 1714 8th Avenue
Downtown Neighbourhood Meeting - Wednesday, May 6; 6:30-8:00pm; Holy Trinity Church; 514 Carnarvon Street
“While 75% of the CF Caucus has decided to quit on the current Mayor, we are very pleased that 100% of the elected NWP Caucus is ready to run on their record of service and ready to do more for New Westminster,” said NWP School Board candidate Anita Dunn. “Under Councillor Fontaine’s leadership, we will present a positive platform, fresh energy and open door for voters this fall. It is time for new ideas, a balanced approach and a local government that respects taxpayers again.”
